Medical sociology has now become one of the most dynamic, resilient and promising subdisciplines of sociology. The purpose of the article is to present it as an interdisciplinary science, with a double frame of reference (sociology, medicine). While relating to the classical concept of R. Strauss (1957): sociology of/in medicine, authors raise the question of potential and successful cooperation between medical and sociological circles (sociology with medicine). In addition, a few sociomedical issues are discussed in order to illustrate the general problem. Odwołując się do klasycznej koncepcji R. Straussa (1957): sociology in/of medicine, autorki rozpatrują kwestię potencjalnej, pomyślnej współpracy przedstawicieli środowisk medycznego i socjologicznego (sociology with medicine). Dla zobrazowania powyższych rozważań w pracy przedstawiono kilka zagadnień znajdujących się w obszarze badawczym socjologii medycyny

Training, status and migration of general practitioners / family physicians within Europe

    Get PDF
The survey intended to explore and identify the training background and status of general practitioners/ family physicians (GPs) in member countries within EURACT (European Academy of Teachers in General Practice/Family Medicine), and to gain an overview of processes involved when GP-trained doctors migrate to work in another member country. A questionnaire, with closed and open-ended questions, was sent to representatives of all 39 EURACT-member countries in 2009. The main outcome measures were the training background and status of GPs in public/private settings in each country and the requirements of additional training and testing when migrating to another country. Forty-one completed questionnaires were received from 31 (79%) of the EURACT countries. The data indicate that specialist training for General Practice/ Family Medicine (GP/FM) is well established throughout and generally required for appointment to public career posts. The data also indicate that European Uniontrained GPs can move freely to most countries with usually no tests of medical knowledge or language proficiency. Orientation to the healthcare system in the destination country is usually not provided. work in public/private GP/FM posts in many European countries, although new appointments to public posts RESEARCH ARTICLE Training, status and migration of General Practitioners/Family Physicians within Europe in nearly all countries require specialist GP training. It was not possible to identify a uniform or agreed approach applied by employing agencies to confirm the medical competence and language skills of migrant doctors and to provide them with orientation to healthcare systems. In the high-context dependent discipline of GP/FM this is of concern.peer-reviewe

High-throughput screening in larval zebrafish identifies novel potent sedative-hypnotics

BACKGROUND: Many general anesthetics were discovered empirically, but primary screens to find new sedative-hypnotics in drug libraries have not used animals, limiting the types of drugs discovered. The authors hypothesized that a sedative-hypnotic screening approach using zebrafish larvae responses to sensory stimuli would perform comparably to standard assays, and efficiently identify new active compounds. METHODS: The authors developed a binary outcome photomotor response assay for zebrafish larvae using a computerized system that tracked individual motions of up to 96 animals simultaneously. The assay was validated against tadpole loss of righting reflexes, using sedative-hypnotics of widely varying potencies that affect various molecular targets. A total of 374 representative compounds from a larger library were screened in zebrafish larvae for hypnotic activity at 10 µM. Molecular mechanisms of hits were explored in anesthetic-sensitive ion channels using electrophysiology, or in zebrafish using a specific reversal agent. RESULTS: Zebrafish larvae assays required far less drug, time, and effort than tadpoles. In validation experiments, zebrafish and tadpole screening for hypnotic activity agreed 100% (n = 11; P = 0.002), and potencies were very similar (Pearson correlation, r > 0.999). Two reversible and potent sedative-hypnotics were discovered in the library subset. CMLD003237 (EC50, ~11 µM) weakly modulated γ-aminobutyric acid type A receptors and inhibited neuronal nicotinic receptors. CMLD006025 (EC50, ~13 µM) inhibited both N-methyl-D-aspartate and neuronal nicotinic receptors. CONCLUSIONS: Photomotor response assays in zebrafish larvae are a mechanism-independent platform for high-throughput screening to identify novel sedative-hypnotics. The variety of chemotypes producing hypnosis is likely much larger than currently known. This work was supported by grants from Shanghai Jiaotong University School of Medicine, Shanghai, China, and the Chinese Medical Association, Beijing, China (both to Dr. Yang). Autofluorescence and diagnostic accuracy of lesions of oral mucosa: a pilot study

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study was to determine the accuracy of autofluorescence techniques for diagnosing oral mucosa lesions, using as reference pattern for comparison the visual diagnosis made by a clinical specialist. A pilot study was conducted with 60 patients divided in a control group without mucosal pathology and a study group with known clinical history for mucosal pathology. Both groups were examined by an oral medicine specialist and by a general dentist who used VELscope(r) system, which applies tissue fluorescence visualization to identify oral mucosal abnormalities. Using the VELscope(r) system, the general dentist made overdiagnosis in two cases and underdiagnosis in one case. The sensitivity and specificity for the oral medicine specialist were 1 (95% CI: 0.884 to 1). For the general dentist, the sensitivity did not improve significantly with the use of VELscope(r) system [0.53 (95% CI: 0.343 to 0.717) versus 0.49 (95% CI: 0.406 to 0.773)] and the specificity was 0.80 (95% CI: 0.614 to 0.923). A limitation of the study is the small sample size, which does not fully represent a population and extrapolation of the data should be done carefully. Based on the obtained results, no clinical benefits were obtained using this VELscope(r) system

Synthesis about a collaborative project on “Technology Assessment of Autonomous Systems”

The project started in 2009 with the support of DAAD in Germany and CRUP in Portugal under the “Collaborative German-Portuguese University Actions” programme. One central goal is the further development of a theory of technology assessment applied to robotics and autonomous systems in general that reflects in its methodology the changing conditions of knowledge production in modern societies and the emergence of new robotic technologies and of associated disruptive changes. Relevant topics here are handling broadened future horizons and new clusters of science and technology (medicine, engineering, interfaces, industrial automation, micro-devices, security and safety), as well as new governance structures in policy decision making concerning research and development (R&D).Robotic systems, Autonomous systems, Technology assessment, Germany, Portugal

In the present clinical study 30 Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis) patients were registered from the O.P.D. and I.P.D., Department of Kayachikitsa (General Medicine), R A Podar, Ayurved College, Mumbai. The aim of the study was to evaluate the role of selected Ayurvedic medicine in the management of Amavata (Rheumatoid arthritis). The treatment schedule was that 30ml Rasonadi Kwatha twice a day with lukewarm water for 30 days. In present clinical study 40% patients showed major improvement, 50% patients showed minor improvement, 10% patients showed no improvement and no one patient had got complete remission. No adverse drug reaction was found in this clinical study
